Can I Dye My Hair Twice?
February 7th 2009 15:28
Looking around, the women and men of the world will rarely see hair that is just one tone. This is the trouble with at home hair coloring, the color always ends up flat. In the salon, hair can be colored, highlighted and lowlighted all at the same time. Why can't a person do the same thing at home?
They can and I can offer a little insight into how to double process the hair at home and keep it healthy and strong. How can I do that? I have been double processing my hair for the last 20 years, every 6 weeks like clockwork and my hair is healthy and strong. The key is in the after treatment of the hair.
The Basic Steps of Double Processing
Step 1: Choose the right color combination. I love the dark base color, red highlight choice (as you can tell from the picture above). But, that may not be the choice for everyone. Some people love to go blond then red, or even blonde then black. The choice is yours, just make sure to have two colors on hand when starting the process.
Step 2: Dye the hair with the overall color. Now you are going to dye you hair the base color. Leave the color on the exact time the box tells you to. This is important as the base color is the color that will dominate the style. The highlights or lowlights will not be as crucial because color variations are good in every color aside from the base color.
Step 3: Rinse, condition and style. After the time has expired - rinse the color from the hair, add the conditioner and leave on for 10 minutes. Not the mere 1 or 2 minutes suggested. Then, add quite a but of styling product to the hair and blow dry. After the hair is dry, spray a bit of hair spray on the hair and wait about 1/2 hour. After your wait, brush through the hair and ready the second color.
Step 4: Apply the second color. The second color will need to be applied at timed intervals in order to make the colors blend well together and appear more professional. Using a cap prevents multiple applications so go for the brush in technique. Add a couple of strips of color to the hair. Wait 10 minutes then add another couple of smaller strips of color. Wait 5 more minutes and add some tiny, fine lines of color. Wait 5 minutes and rinse the hair.
Step 5: Condition and go. The conditioning part is important after the second application. Apply a strong conditioner (like those sold for repair) and leave on for 30 minutes. Rinse and enjoy your new professional quality color for a mere fraction of the cost.
